Join us for ToonSeum’s annual fundraiser, Ka-Blam! on Saturday, April 22nd at The ToonSeum, located at 945 Liberty Ave. in Pittsburgh’s historic Cultural District!
While initially scheduled for the Teamster Temple in Lawrenceville, Ka-Blam! 2017 is now being held at the ToonSeum to give attendees an opportunity to view its current historic From MLK to March: Civil Rights in Comics and Cartoons and the career spanning Hermetically Sealed: The Art of Ed Piskor exhibits.
“We decided to switch the venue this year because we currently have two historic exhibits on display at the ToonSeum and we want to give as many people as possible a chance to view them while they can,” said ToonSeum Executive Director John Kelly. “The response we received from visitors at our recent Ed Piskor Opening Party and PIX comics festival was overwhelmingly positive and we want to continue that momentum.”
The theme this year’s Ka-Blam! fundraiser is Cosmic Cause-Play and will feature great sci-fi costumes, themed activities and a pop-up showcase highlighting the work of Joss Whedon, creator of Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He also is responsible for bringing Marvel’s Avengers to the big screen as director. Attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite science fiction character.
This year Ka-Blam! will honor local Pittsburgh cartoonists Ed Piskor and Caitlin Rose Boyle with its NEMO Award, which is given to notable individuals “for excellence in the cartoon arts”. Past NEMO recipients include veteran comic-book artists Bill Griffith and Carol Tyler, editorial and comic-strip artist Dick Locher, and comics artist, editorial cartoonist and artists’ rights advocate Jerry Robinson. As a tie-in to his NEMO Award, the ToonSeum will display its current Hermetically Sealed: The Art of Ed Piskor exhibit. Signed panels featured in the exhibit and signed copies of Piskor’s New York Times Best-Selling graphic novels Hip Hop Family Tree will be available for purchase at Ka-Blam! A free copy of Piskor’s Hip Hop Family Tree limited edition comic book will also be included in the Ka-Blam! goody bags given to all attendees.
At Ka-Blam! 2017, the ToonSeum will also honor long-time supporter Gregg Behr, Executive Director of The Grable Foundation, with its GERTIE Award, given to individuals exhibiting “great character” and support of the ToonSeum’s mission.
Ka-Blam! features live drawing, coveted auction items, and great fare and refreshments from some of Pittsburgh’s best local establishments.
A special VIP session will start at 7 pm and General Admission begins at 8 pm. VIP Tickets are $75 and General Admission tickets are $45. VIP group rates are available for $675 for 10 attendees and General Admission group rates for 10 are $405.
